The luxurious S-Class touring sedan has for years assumed the visage of classiness, erudition, and ground-breaking technology for Mercedes-Benz. Overhauled completely for the upcoming year, the latest edition prolongs the tradition with arguably the most indulgent cabins available on the market having an assortment of flexible leather embellishments, delicate wood garnishing and authentic metal trims covering every corner of the S-Class' interior. In addition to that the car has been stacked up with generous numbers of hi-tech gadgetry to put tech-freaks into a state of sheer bliss.

Exteriors

S-Class assimilates conventional design elements like a ceremonial, upright version of the famed Mercedes grille with a graceful surface detail inspired from the marquee’s stylish four-doors-sedan variants. Notably, the lights of the car are made up entirely of LED units, since there is not a single luminous light bulb located inside or outside of the car. For reducing weight, all the exterior panels have been made from aluminum, helping to shed load by approximately 300 lbs. in comparison to the previous edition.

Engine Specifications

The 2014 S-Class will be offered in two forms, the rear-wheel-drive-S550 and the all-wheel-drive S550 AUTOMATIC. Fusion, diesel and greater mobility AMG models will be manufactured after the formal launch of the rear-wheel and all-wheel drive option. Both S550 models are driven by a twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 engine capable of producing 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque in an rpm range between 1800 rpm to 3,500 rpm. Irrespective of drive-wheels, the S550s gallops from zero to 60 mph in a staggering 4.8 seconds before reaching its top speed of 130 mph. Fuel economy has not yet been declared, but the German marquee is likely to include a start/stop system to reduce fuel pilferage. A seven-speed automatic transmission is normal, as well as a rack-and-pinion electromechanical steering.

The preset chassis setup is comprised of a cozy and urbane full air suspension with responsive dampeners. The 2014 S-Class would be the world's first car to incorporate technology to detect and tackle bumps courtesy a discretionary ‘MAGIC BODY CONTROL’ system. The device uses hi-fi cameras to detect infirmities in the road surface in front and readies the chassis to flatten any potholes or bumps.

Interiors

Every S-Class model has been empowered with a custom-made navigation system, an AM/FM/CD/SiriusXM Burmester CD player system, a panoramic sunroof, warmed and ventilated seats, leather embroidery, a backside camera, ambient LED interior lighting, automated rear windows and adaptive high-beam assist. The upscale Premium-1 Package includes aerated and warmed massaging front seats, power rear windows, sun-blinders and parktronic dynamic parking assistor.

Mercedes has also made innovative attempts to make the sedan substantially auto-empowered. Dubbed as the “Distronic Plus Steering Assist and stop-go Auto-Pilot system”, it uses inbuilt cameras and multiple radar sensors, to comprehend lines on the road and essentially maneuver and put on the brakes of the car automatically at lower speeds on moderately straight roads. An extremely helpful device in navigating lengthy traffic jams with the driver’s peace-of-mind intact.

While allowing the auto-pilot handle traffic-maneuvering duties, occupants can enjoy two mammoth 12.3-inch T.F.T screens that are positioned in front of the driver and on top of the car’s central stack. The left-hand portion of the screen in front of the driver’s seat, substitutes a traditional analog-gadget cluster, while the right-hand portion exhibits weather, entertainment and Google maps-linked direction-finding info. A touch-perceptive keypad with a dozen customized data settings lets passengers handle composite tasks without needing to reach out to the dashboard. In addition, Mercedes' Linguatronic speech identifier allows users to speak one-word input commands and text phone messages and read e-mails as part of the package.
