Oscars 2013: Ang Lee wins best director for 'Life of Pi'.
Taiwanese director Ang Lee belongs to an exclusive club of filmmakers of Chinese origin to garner critical and commercial success on both sides of the Pacific. The Academy Award winning director has showcased his directorial skills in a wide range of acclaimed movies and is widely tipped to depict the Angelina Jolie starrer “Cleopatra”. Lee has not been shy to portray controversial subjects like gay relationships in his movies. His genius can be gauged from the fantastic cinematic adaption of the novel “Life of Pi”, which experts considered impossible to be turned into a movie. Currently the film of the same name is in contention for eleven Academy Awards.
The impressive run of success enjoyed by Lee in the Hollywood movie industry has cemented his status as one of the richest Asian directors in the world with an estimated net worth of $32 million. During the initial phase of his career, Ang enjoyed a stable stream of revenue from the Taiwanese movie industry. Lee’s financial fortunes have skyrocketed since his entry into the Hollywood big league and the bulk of his impressive bank balance has come from his successful international movies.
Lee’s financial clout has ensured a very comfortable standard of living for the director and his family. Ang resides in a luxurious mansion in the upmarket Larchmont area of New York City and prefers to devote most of his spare time to his family. Lee has lent his support to quite a few philanthropic causes. He has spent a lot of time campaigning to raise funds for actor Jet Li’s charitable organization, “One Foundation”. Lee is a supporter of universal human rights and has given a speech at the Human Rights Campaign Gala organized in 2007.
Lee was born in Taiwan in a middle class family which put a great deal of emphasis on his higher education and mastery of Chinese Literature. Lee reaped the benefits of growing up in a stable family background and developed a very strong value system and belief in his Chinese roots. The director completed his bachelor's degree in theater from the prestigious University of Illinois where he met his future life partner Jane Lin, a Microbiologist. Lee is a complete family man and has managed to stay out of all controversies. The producer tied the knot with his companion in 1983 and the happily married couple has since been blessed by two sons.
