1973 Porsche 917/30, “the perfect race car” to be auctioned at Amelia Island
In what became one of the most spectacular and successful episodes of motor racing history, the Porsche 917/30 is set to go under the hammer at the Amelia Island auction sale, preceded over by Gooding & Company. Dubbed by many as the ‘perfect racing car’, this Porsche was an a part of the 1973 Can-Am season, and pumped out a huge 1,500 HP of engine power, making it the most powerful road racing car ever built. So much was its imposing presence on the racing circuit, which after driver Mark Danohue won the 6 championship races in the year, the SCCA had to bring about certain changes to their rules and make this car withdraw from future races. However, with the Amelia Island auction taking place, this Porsche is stated to fetch in excess of $3.25 million- $ 4million.

Indian collector buys King William IV Double Mohurs gold coin for Rs 1.3 million at auction
The trend in the past few years has shown that there still lies, a very active interest in gathering collectibles from by gone era, especially from countries in Asia. After some historic auctions like the 1910 Chinese Dragon coin and the rare Korean gold coin auction, it is the turn of a King William IV Double Mohurs gold coin which gained the record setting price of Rs.1.3 million ($26,382), at an auction in India, making it the highest ever sum paid to acquire such a coin in India. Issued in 1835, through the royal mint in the Indian port city of Kolkata, these gold coins were issued as one of the first in their series and went into circulation with the following year.

RM Auctions to offer the historic Ferrari-Powered Hydroplane "ARNO XI" in Monaco auction
With the combining dynamics of aeronautic vehicles, and the vessels of the sea, one is left to wonder exactly how these diverse facets of engineering combine together on a common platform. Well, Ferrari had done it in the 1950’s, and that very creation from the Italian carmaker’s factory, is set to go on auction at the Monaco Auction in May this year. The 1953 Ferrari Hydroplane ARNO XI is now on the auction block, along with other such rare specimens of automotive genius. The Hydroplane ARNO XI which combined the designing expertise of Achille Castoldi, and the engineering genius of the Ferrari Company into this piece of automotive genius. The auction event is being undertaken by RM Auctions.

World's largest collection of 250 year old liquor goes on auction
For premium liquor collectors, there could be virtually nothing better than to lay hands on an entire collection of rare liquors. No wonder the Domaine de la Romanee Conti auction in Hong Kong last year fetched above $800,000 at an auction. But now, what is set to take place in the records books as one of the most expensive, and also unique, is the complete liquor collection of Mr. Van der Bunt, a Dutch collector worth approximately $8 million. The highlight of the whole set is the 1795 Brugerolle cognac, which reportedly was a part of French Emperor, Napoleon Boneparte’s collection. However, there are close to 5,000 other bottles in this 250-year old collection set to go on sale.

A 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO becomes the second most expensive car at $32 million
The 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO which we featured in out listing of most expensive Ferraris, now has gone on to become the 2nd most expensive car ever sold at an auction, by fetching a price of £20.2 million ($32.1 million). From 1962 till 1964, only 39 of these cars came out of the Ferrari factory, and have since then commanded record prices amongst vintage car collators, despite the recent years of economic downturn. This particular vehicle, has topped the ranks amongst most expensive auctioned cars in Britain, and will now head to Spain in the new owner’s collection.

Elizabeth Taylor's expensive art collection goes under the hammer
After Elizabeth Taylor’s jewelry collection which went on auction last year, its time the legendary actress’s art collection to go under the hammer. After the jewelry collection smashed all auction record prices, it was the art collection of the famous star which fetched approximately $22 million from a set of 3 paintings, including the Vincent Van Gogh’s The Vue de l’Asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Rémy (pictured below) which sold for $15.91 million, the Portrait of Edgar Degas which bought in $1.13 million, and also the Camille Pissarro scenery which fetched $4.77 million. There were around 35 other works of art, which also went under the hammer at the event by Christie’s. It showed the late actresses various appetites for collecting works of notoriety, and her skill at selecting the best of the lot.

Morphy's auction house to auction rare vintage comics for serious collectors
After the much talked comic book auctions last year, which included the Avengers #1 book, and 1938 Action Comics #1 (the world’s most expensive comic book), this year too has bought in surprises for the avid book collector, and fans of comics from the by-gone era. Morphy’s Auction will be putting on the auction block 2 books which include a May 1939 No.27 issue of the ‘Detective Comics’ with Batman on the cover, and the other being a May 1963 issue of the ‘Amazing Spiderman’. From what may have begun as entertaining books for kids, as now turned into some of the most sought after hobbies, and literary memorabilia people know of.

Obama's Chrysler 300 is up on eBay for $1 million
The internet space is now the new place for high-end shopping, including cars! After covering some significant purchases like the Ferrari F430 and the 1964 Pontiac Firebird, it’s time for another attention grabbing item: President Barack Obama’s 2005 Chrysler 300. When in 2005, the then senator started touring for his senatorial duties, this sedan was apparently one of the vehicles he used for being ferried back and forth between Washington D.C. and Chicago but when the bid for the presidency began, he bid farewell to the car and used the Ford Escape Hybrid instead. Though it was put on auction earlier, but the sale wasn’t successful and hence this time, it carries a $2,000 deposit to start the bidding, which begins with a price $1 million.

One-off 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Town Car concept goes on auction
From the multiple auto companies who had grabbed the much of the limelight in the 50’s for their iconic vehicles, it was Cadillac too who had a share of the fame for some of its cars like the 1955 Series 75 Presidential limousine. Another rare, in fact a one-off concept car is now on auction block for sale, namely the 1956 Cadillac Eldorado Brougham Town Car. Put forward as the Cadillac’s answer to the Ford Mark II, it carried a more elite and luxurious concept as an offering as compared to the Ford, thus becoming an even more of a collector’s item.

In the past we showed you Microsoft Co-founder, Paul Allen’s MiG-29 fighter jet plane which he purchased in his personal gamut of high-end toys, and also the availability of the Hawker Hurricane fighter jets for aircraft enthusiasts who could shell out that extra bit cash for this unique habit. However, such an opportunity has indeed crept up again with the Fouga CM 170 Magister fighter jet plane going on sale at the Artcurial Aeronautics Auction, with a price estimate between $76,511- $102,014 (€60,000-€80,000). Apart from refined engineering, this aircraft is known to have a notable history with the French Air Force as well.
