After the Chinese captured the luxury market this year with the Year of the Dragon editions from designer brands, they showed their strong presence in Paris by bidding rather aggressively for the personal assets of French movie icon, Alain Delon. Though there were a number of his personal collections include the numerous wristwatches which he sold at the auction, his Audermars Piguet Royal Oak watch crossed all expectation by fetching more than 27 times its expected price. Finally, the coveted watch went to an unnamed bidder for $89,848 (€68,750), which was incidentally the actor’s accessory in movies like ‘Comme un boomerang’ and ‘Parole de flic’.

Alain Delon and his famous Audermars Piguet Royal Oak watch

Very recently, the French actor wasn’t in the pink of health, and had to undergo a 24-hour stint in the hospital due to heart problems. It was this instance, which made one of French cinema’s most famous actors, to let go of his elaborate watch and wine collection, including this rather surprising Audermars Piguet Royal Oak watch. Featuring a simplistic approach to its aesthetics, it features a brush finished metallic casing shaped like an octagon. Unlike most other watches from the famous brand, the ‘AP’ logo was placed at 12 ‘o’clock, with a date counter on the 3 ‘o’clock slot. The strapping of the watch is also the classic metallic one, and the movement of the timepiece is known to be an automatic one, with a side winding crown. Very classic and gentlemanly in most ways.

When the total collection was sold off at the event in Paris, the collection was $327,753 (€250,412), which is more than 2.5 times the overall estimate. With the rising influence of the orient in the world of luxury lifestyle and famous auctions, this result isn’t a complete surprise, that Alain Delon is known to be a famous star in Hong Kong. After the initial display there, the bidders seemed rather enthusiastic to catch hold of the actor’s memorabilia, the result of which is already proven.
