Buddhist Zen practices inspire CTRLZAK’s DZEN furniture collection
To be exhibited during the upcoming Milan Design Week (April 12-17, 2011), the DZEN furniture design project by Milan based CTRLZAK Art & Design Studio draws inspiration from the spiritual and physical balance of Buddhist Zen practices. A stick, which is crafted in solid metal, holds a trapezoidal volume with a single mirrored panel to form a coffee table and matching stool. The idea was born when CTRLZAK’s designers Thanos Zakopoulos and Katia Meneghini discovered something unusual on a mountain near a Buddhist temple. They found tiny sticks placed underneath massive boulders, which appear to support them despite their size.
CTRLZAK quotes that he stick is man’s little touch, which supports nature but reminds us that everything is temporary. An amazing blend of form and functionality, the DZEN furniture units convey a beautiful message.
