Celebrity Memorabilia: ‘Wizard of Oz’ Ruby slippers to go on auction

We all know women are obsessed with shoes, even if they have 10 pairs they will always crave for the 11th one. Well, if you are amongst the rich fashionistas then the options further increase as you can always go for the world’s most expensive pair of shoes that are studded with elegant and precious stones and can cost you up to $3 million. One such pair up for auction is ruby slippers worn onscreen by Judy Garland in “The Wizard of Oz”. The pair is expected to fetch somewhere around $2.6-3.8 million, and the latter price is a bit more than the world’s most expensive shoes today.
The shoes will be sold at California auction house Profiles in History’s three-day “Icons of Hollywood” auction. The auction house has previously put on sale other items like Cowardly Lion costume (which went for $805,000) and the Wicked Witch’s hat ($230,000) which are characters of the same movie (The Wizard of Oz). The exact shoes are said to be used in the original classic film in 1939 by Judy Garland’s Dorothy when she hit hard on her heels to go back home to Kansas close to the end of the movie.
The shoes are marked as #7 Judy Garland and have authentic leather soles that are painted red. The shoes are perfect for collectors who long for celebrity memorabilia. The auction will take place on December 16th this year but the location has not been revealed as of now. According to the Profiles in History owner Joe Maddalena, the auction will witness participation of people from across the globe. He further adds:
This is the most important film prop in the world. There is nothing more famous,” said Maddalena. “They are one of the greatest pieces of pop culture in existence.”
The pair was earlier sold at an auction in 1988, and was found by costume department worker Kent Warner in the early 1970s on MGM lot. The pull for this glamorous ruby shoes has been actually strong even after seven decades, as the shoes are in near mint condition.
