Daddy Yankee is an artistic name that immediately brings one word to mind- Reggaeton. Also known for his deep and sustained interest in the underground movement, this Grammy-award winning Latin recording artist 'Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez' has to his name sterling performances in more than 70 albums. Being one of the many pioneers of Reggaeton music, he has earned the nickname, El Cangri. Also an actor and producer of movies, this artists actually did more than anyone to establish reggaeton as a marketable music style during the early 21st century.
The success of Barrio Fino opened up many financial avenues for Daddy Yankee. He signed a $20 million contract with Interscope Records and also earned from his endorsements for Pepsi, extensive international performance tours in more than 30 countries to date. He also hold the title to become the very first Latin artist to sign a deal with Reebok, besides there is a licensed merchandising clothing line "DY" on his name too. His discography covers 6 releases and the latest, Prestige, is due for release. He has appeared in two films and has done the role of Daddy Yankee in three television shows and serials too.
With a maverick approach, Yankee created his own label, El Cartel Records and is the CEO of the same. He has invested in his own production house, publishing house and line of footwear. A man of big philanthropic heart, he has created the Corazón Guerrero foundation which works to transform the lives of poor Latin American children. He is also an active contributor to the Red Cross. Bringing a whiff of fragrance to music styles, Yankee is now well established in his own line of colognes and fragrances too. He has been seen using a Blackberry phone, an Avirex jacket, RayBan glasses and a Mercedes sports car. Needless to say, he invests a lot of his wealth into his family and his music.
The artist was born in Rio Piedras as Ramon Ayala and was interested in music from a tender age. He aspired, however, to be a baseball player in the Major League, but a leg injury forced him to let go of that career and Reggaeton will surely be grateful for that. He became a part of the underground rap movement and received lessons from several artists of the genre. Playero 37 was his first production after which came No Mercy, his first solo album. It took seven years for the next album but by then, Daddy Yankee had matured and Barrio Fino was a big hit. The album sold over 500,000 copies in US itself. His personal life is closely guarded. This much can be said that he treasures his wife and children. He said that his wife was a close friend and he was an intimate counselor for his children.
I'm not a machista that tells his girl what she has to put on. I let her be herself.
The best way to help the Latino community is to give back. I love giving back; I'm quiet about God and what I do, but we do a lot in the Dominican Republic.
'Limbo' has been one of the greatest hits of my career. A great response all over the world, not just Latinos but people in Europe and America.
I feel so much pride to represent my community and be Latino. No doubt about it, above my career and sales being a Latino comes first.
