Daimler debuts Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG
Lighter, faster, technically advanced and more powerful, the all new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG from Daimler is set to embark on the 2012 roadster season in dynamic style. The completely redeveloped SL is designed to ensure that driving pleasure never stops; in short it’s the symbiosis of sportiness, comfort, style and innovation. It will be at the upcoming New York International Auto Show, and is due to hit the showroom floors in November.
The new SL 65 AMG is an incomparably exciting high performance roadster that gets power of 630 hp and maximum torque of 1000 Nm from the technically reworked 6.0-litre twin turbo V12 engine. If performance figures are to be believed, the new SL 65 AMG is well capable to beat its predecessor. It delivers exceptional driving experience as it accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in a whip of 4 seconds. Apart from the stunning acceleration, the BlueDIRECT engine delivers impressive smooth running characteristics along with distinctive AMG V12 sound. The big change for SL 65 AMG includes, for the first time AMG has combined the revised powerplant with the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC, a seven speed automatic gearbox with Blue-EFFICIENCY features, including automatic start/stop.
Since the letters ‘SL’ has been synonymous with ‘super light’, the new SL 65 AMG’s lower weight takes the meaning quite literally. Comparing to the steel design of the predecessor model, the new SL 65 AMG has intelligent lightweight construction with all-aluminum body-shell and carbon fiber that contributes to reduce the fuel consumption. A total of 170 kg off the curb weight has been knocked off, and systematic use of lightweight construction principles has been adopted for the updated AMG sports suspension, based on Merc’s Active Body Control. Fuel economy figures are also economical, as only 11.6 liters are now required to travel 100 km.
It is also equipped with the newly developed electro-mechanical AMG speed-sensitive sports steering that impresses with its high-dynamic qualities and immediate feedback at the critical limits. Moreover, to decelerate this high-performance sports car, one can rely on its advanced braking system, offering high resistance to fading and optimum sensitivity.
The new SL 65 AMG not only boasts effortless superiority for its engineering but also for its stylish and gorgeous looks. With Mercedes star mounted on two blade-like louvers, it’s the first model to feature the new AMG brand face. The impressive front section is dominated by the ‘twin blade’ radiator grille and front apron’s lower cross strut in high-sheen chrome, distinguishing it from the SL 63 AMG model. Driving the SL remains an open air experience with the panoramic vario-roof with MAGIC SKY CONTROL that enables the SL 65 AMG to be transformed into a coupe or roadster in just 20 seconds.
The lavish interiors of this roadster boast a pleasant wellness ambience, combining uncomplicated sportiness with stylish luxury. Inside of SL is a feast for all the senses; electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with distinctive two-tone or single upholstery in nappa leather along with a special diamond pattern, embossed AMG emblems on the seat backrest, AIRSCARF neck-level heating, seat memory, climatised seats and multicontour functionality are the notable highlights.
Trimmed with finest leather, the cabin also features a Bang & Olufsen BeoSound AMG high-end surround sound system and the latest version of Mercedes’ Command infotainment software. The new roadster gets lots of comprehensive equipments, including the PARKTRONIC, an active parking assist, Keyless go convenience package and hands free access system, intelligent light system, magic vision control, the anti-theft alarm system and COMAND Online entertainment system with six-disc DVD changer.
In terms of safety, the new SL 65 AMG sets new standard in its class, and is one of the world’s safest roadsters that come equipped with a crash-optimized aluminum structure, standard-fit PRE-SAFE systems and assistance systems at par with those of the Mercedes S-Class sedans. In addition, another feature includes the NECK-PRO crash-responsive head restraints, developed exclusively by Mercedes-Benz.
Speaking of the earlier model, the SL 63 AMG, it gets power of 537-horsepower from its M571 twin-turbo V8 engine, allowing it to accelerate at 62 mph in just 4.2 seconds.
Deliveries of Mercedes SL 65 AMG in Germany are expected in November this year at the sales price of $312,850.
