David O. Russell
Director and Screenwriter
$ 20 Million
Acclaimed and Oscar-nominated American director, writer and producer known for commercially successful films like Three Kings, The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook, David Owen Russell is truly one of independent cinema's most successful purveyors of familial dysfunction. All of his films have been widely appreciated by movie critics even though only a few of his productions have set the cash registers ringing at the box office. The director is known for his fiercely independent streak. David has often been involved in quite a few unsavory incidents involving his film crew members and been accused of using abusive language towards them. His mercurial nature and obsession for perfection has often led to nasty fights on the sets with even A-list Hollywood actors like George Clooney. All these incidents have left a very negative impact on Russell’s image and cost him enormously in terms of goodwill and movie funding even though he has managed to restore his reputation somewhat in the past few years. Russell has won several honors and was once nominated for the Best Director’s crown at the 2010 Academy Awards for the movie “The Fighter”.
David Russell has come a long way from his middle class roots and his status as one of the most brilliant directors in Hollywood, leading his way towards securing a financial future. Today, the director is a member of the coveted millionaire’s club and his net worth is estimated to be in the region of $20 million. Almost all of this envious bank balance has come from David’s successful movie ventures.
Russell’s impressive financial status has enabled him to be able to afford a very comfortable way of life. The director owns homes in New York and Los Angeles and shuttles a lot between the two cities. He is a complete workaholic and doesn't like to take any breaks from his work schedule. The man doesn't have too many friends and mostly prefers to spend his spare time by relaxing at his home. Russell has attempted to do his bit for philanthropic causes and has lent his support to the NGO “The Art of Elysium”. David has donated a lot of money and provided his invaluable guidance to the “Ghetto Film School”, an organization dedicated to helping young underprivileged filmmakers of Latino and African-American origin.
David Russell was born and brought up in a stable middle class New York home. The director is of mixed race origin and grew up in an atheistic household. His father was of Russian Jewish origin and mother an Irish Catholic. Not much is known about David’s relationships owing to his reclusive nature. Russell was once married Janet Grillo for fifteen years but unfortunately the marriage ended in divorce owing to the couple’s differences. It is not clear if he is seeing someone now.

I think any spiritual experience that's worthwhile is not about ego and it will humble you in some way. And also, a Zen monk once said to me, 'If you're not laughing, then you're not getting it.'
I just love real characters; they're not pretentious, and every emotion is on the surface, they're regular working people. Their likes, their dislikes, their loves, their hates, their passions; they're all right there on the surface.
The closer you stay to emotional authenticity and people, character authenticity, the less you can go wrong. That's how I feel now, no matter what you're doing.
I feel profoundly blessed. I feel it's a great privilege to make any motion picture.
There's nothing better than an actor who is really, really hungry to show everything they've got.
