His role as Jimmy Brooks on Degrassi: The Next Generation got him noticed but not in a way that a rapper would desire. With almost nil street cred to even qualify as a gangsta' rapper, Aubrey 'Drake' Graham proved to be no sitting duck for his opponents in duels. With a couple of top-of-the-charts albums, half a dozen summer jams and a succesful dabble in YOLO, Drake has achieved something coming from the clean Toronto streets what very few other meanie rappers have!
Thank Me Later in 2010 and Take Care in 2011 have earned the rapper millions of dollars. His hit single in the second album, The Motto, with its tagline, "You only live once: that's the motto, nigga, YOLO" has been on top of dozens of charts and has sold millions of copies itself. He is also an active tourer in the recent years. The rapster has also dappled in two movies, lending his voice for Ice Age 4 and has been part of 8-9 TV serials.
Aubrey Graham Drake sure knows how to live life in style. He has purchased a home in Hidden Hills, California - a gated community of 12,500 square feet for $2.8 million. He has another mansion which he has purchased for $9 million! He is also known as a tourer and vacationer, going to places for his rapping and for leisure. For instance, he took a royal Mediterranean cruise for a week along with the Barbadian singer, Rihanna, with whom he has been romantically linked. His lifestyle includes top brands like Nike, Dolce & Gabbana, BlackBerry, Air Jordan, Tom Ford and Alexander Wang. He supports the DNA foundation which is committed to battling sex-slavery and exploitation.
Drake is the son of drummer Dennis Graham and nephew of musicians, Teenie Hodges and Larry Graham. Attending the Forest Hill Collegiate Institute, he was smitten by the acting bug. Soon, in 2001, he was cast as Jimmy Brooks in the teen-drama, Degrassi: The Next Generation. It is not an exaggeration to say that his role and storyline got tremendous popularity for the Canadian show even among US audiences. In the meantime, Drake also began rap and sing, releasing his mixtapes, Comeback Season and Room for Improvement on MySpace where they caught the attention of Lil Wayne. He collaborates with him even today. His debut album, Thank Me Later started as #1 on Billboard and the single, Find Your Love, went platinum. Billboard got into its biggest ever bidding war over Drake and naturally so for he had worked by then with the biggest names in business - Jay-Z, Trey Songz, Robin Thicke, Kanye West, Jamie Foxx and Mary J. Blige. His second album itself, Take Care (2011), with its hit single, The Motto, has catapulted him into legend status. He has won 45 awards to date with nearly another 100 nominations.
