Wrik Sen / Jun 12 2011

Luxury watch maker Girard Perregaux has introduced a limited series of watches, called "ww.tc," as a remembrance to legendary watchmaker John Harrison. John Harrison is best known for creating landmark timepieces such the H-4, which could be used for calculating the longitude on any part of the earth’s surface.

These watches, of which only 50 pieces will ever be created, display the time from 24 time zones around the world. The dial, which has various locations displayed on it, is made in the particular pattern in which Mr. Harrison’s son William took a voyage on the Atlantic ocean to test the H-4 timepiece’s ability to measure the longitude of the earth, during the 18th century. To give each of these time-pieces the extra-fine finish, a lot of care for detailing has been taken off. The dial of the watch has been enameled from the specially created champlevé enamel, adding to its classic appeal. The map on the dial has been made on a plate of unprocessed white gold while the compass rose displaying eight directions of the wind has been has been hand-crafted by an artist. The liquid green and blue enamel, which shows the earth’s most dominant colors, has been applied with the help of a brush, but only after vitrification of the surface at 800 degrees centigrade, which is then cooled, and hard brushed by using special paper and stone to give it a smooth texture. To finish the surfacing, diamond filing is done to give it a glitter and then laced with silver powder, marking William Harrison’s journey from Europe to America. Adding further, Port Royal and Portsmouth have been especially highlighted with a blue tint, to mark the cities of historic significance of the voyage across the Atlantic. The final touch of grace is then shown in the engraving of the Girard Perregaux brand, known for its reliability and finesse of design.

We have earlier covered this brand in our listing for the world’s most expensive wrist watches, and also when Bottega Veneta partnered with them for the limited edition unisex watch.
