Ikea envisions the kitchen of the future

Naveen Kumar / Aug 18 2010

By the year 2040, your kitchen will be your personal trainer, dietician, psychologist and lifestyle coach. The same has been stated by an independent Future Kitchen report made by The Future Laboratory. Ikea commissioned the London-based consultancy for trend forecasting, consumer insight and brand strategy to visualize the kitchen of 2040. The kitchen of the future will have mood-adjusting kitchenware, self-cleaning appliances, mood lighting, integrated sixth-generation iPads, 3D food printing and fridges that project cooking tutorials. They say that by 2040, the kitchen will be so high-tech that it will almost be alive, responding actively to our needs like only a mother could. After the jump are the three of Ikea's kitchens of the future.

• INTUITIV kitchen

The Intuitiv kitchen is one possible kitchen of the future where LED light projections adjust to your mood and sensor can tell you if you drank heavily last night. The kitchen calendar will be synced with the aromatherapy infused walls. The high-tech fridge will show you the breakfast options and the essential vitamins you need on a particular day. Moreover, when you reach home after work, a hologrammed chef will help you with the recipes. Carole Reddish, Deputy Managing Director of Ikea UK & Ireland, said…

The INTUITIV kitchen is a possible kitchen of the future with over one third of the UK population (41%) expecting that by 2040 we won't even have to cook for ourselves.

• ELEMENTARA – The Back to Nature Kitchen

The Elementra kitchen has its focus on energy saving and a connection to the nature. You can grow your own food, which could be kept cool and fresh through cold larders. The Elementra puts emphasis on using kitchen appliances that help you cut down on electricity bills. All Ikea appliances are also Energy class A rated.

•SKARP - The Smart Kitchen

The Skarp kitchen is the most advanced and will be equipped with synchronized appliances, which will work at the touch of a button. iPad styled devices will be used for communication. The Skarp will also contribute to energy savings, with devices like phone-apps that control carbon emissions and thermostats that respond to our voices and fingerprints. Cooking or cleaning is done at the touch of a button.

Well, everything about Ikea’s kitchens of the future seems rational and we might see such technologically advanced kitchens years before 2040 arrives.
