Konstantin Chaykin ‘Lunokhod’ watch tracks the moon’s movements

The moon has been a source of much mystery and intricacy, as man still unveils new facts about the celestial body every day. Using these mysterious factors, Konstantin Chaykin has created the ‘Lunokhod’ (meaning New Moon) watch, which keeps a close track on the exact positioning and movement of the moon. Handcrafted to the slightest detail, the moon has been depicted in the watch by a natural pearl which amongst other things, resembles the moon’s shape in the closest possible way. Since unique materials such as these are hard to find, the watch has also been given a limited edition series of 8 pieces only.

On closer examination, one would begin to unravel the mystery and the detail which has gone into creating this horological masterpiece. Not only is it the first one to track the moon so closely, but also uses numerous natural ingredients in its most raw form, to create its functioning mechanism. The watch’s chassis has been created with 18 karat yellow gold, which has been crafted by hand to the finest of points. Within the chassis, is an exposed skeleton dial, which displays the mechanical movements of the timepiece and also houses a rare piece of pearl, not very common in nature. Around this ‘moon-faced’ stone is a silver half sphere, depicting the dark side of the earth’s satellite, and which moves in perfect tandem to its phases. Just like the actual, the complete journey of this moon is completed in exactly 29 days, 15 hours, 44 minutes, and 2.8 seconds. The actual time is indicated through hours, and minutes, on semi-circular golden paths, engraved with Arabic numerals and tracked by an intricately carved gold needle. There are dual formats to display the hours; 12-hour and 24-hour.

The only things missing for us are the strapping fabric of the watch, which is we guess could be black leather, and also the pricing for this unique limited edition watch. However, we know that 8 horological enthusiasts are going to get a chance to own one of them, much to everyone’s envy. For those who are fascinated with the moon’s doings, we suggest you refer to our post on Patek Philippe’s most expensive watches.

Thanks, Konstantin Chaykin!
