Parmigiani creates a clock with 30-year continuous lunar calendar

For the very first time in the history of watchmaking, Swiss luxury watchmaker Parmigiani has created a mechanical clock based on the Hegirian Calendar, or Islamic lunar calendar. The Parmigiani 30-year continuous lunar calendar clock tells the time over a lunar cycle that lasts for 30 years. The calendar is simply theoretical, as it is based on the observation of the celestial mechanical movement. The lunar calendar is a base shared by the Hegirian or Islamic calendar, and is calculated on a year of 12 lunar months, each alternating either 29 or 30 days.

The Hegirian year is shorter than the Gregorian year and has 354 or 355 days. The 30-year periodical lunar cycle swaps the 19 normal years with 11 leap years. The calendar automatically corrects the lunar cycle. Moreover, the user can select from a choice of two leap year cycles. All the user needs to know is the type of calendar used in the current location.

The dial of the clock shows the hours and minutes, the date in Arabic numerals, the day of the week and the month in Arabic calligraphy, the leap years in Arabic numerals and the normal years in indices.
