Terrafugia Transition flying car is slated to hit the skies in late 2011
Flying cars become a reality with FAA granting its approval to the Terrafugia Transition, a roadable aircraft venture from a group of MIT alums. The 1,440-pound flying car is to fly under a "light sport" designation and it requires only 20 hours of flying time to get the proper license. The car boasts a top speed of around 115 mph with a range of 460 miles in the air, and gets around 30 mpg on the road. The two-seater aero-auto hybrid can fold its wings when on the ground, and is approximately 19 feet long in folded mode to fit easily into your garage. As an aircraft, it stands a few inches shorter and has a wingspan of 27 feet, 6 inches.

The vehicle completed its first test flight successfully last year, and will run into production soon. The first customer delivery is expected in 2011. So, for all those who need an "escape from land" should get ready to splurge around $194,000 to ride this fantasy drive. The folks over at Terrafugia are already accepting $10,000 deposit, less a modest processing fee, which remains fully refundable.
