This is the most expensive photograph ever sold at auction
At last week's Christie's contemporary art auction in New York, Cindy Sherman's 1981 photo "Untitled #96" fetched $3.89 million, thereby setting a new record for the most expensive photograph ever auctioned. It was earlier expected to sell for between $1.5 million and $2 million. New York dealer Philippe Segalot bought the photograph, which shows the artist as a cashmere-clad ingénue lying supine on the floor and clutching a page torn from the newspaper classifieds.
This particular image appeared at auction for the first time, and was earlier included in the permanent collection of many prestigious museums, including New York's Museum of Modern Art, the Akron Art Museum in Ohio and the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam. Last year, Cindy Sherman's "Untitled #153," from 1985 went for $2.7 million. The previous record for the most expensive photograph was held by Sotheby's for a Richard Prince photograph taken from his untitled cowboy series, which was auctioned for $3.4 million back in 2008. Yet another record breaking sale for most expensive photograph was seen in 2007 or an Andreas Gursky diptych, which was sold for $3.34 million at Sotheby's in London.
