Whiteleys’ starry table wins NASA/Etsy Space Craft Contest
Last year, NASA and Etsy together announced the Space Craft Contest, which asked the enthusiasts to create handmade art and crafts inspired by the NASA Space Shuttle Program and space exploration at large. The contest received more than 600 entries in three different categories - two-dimensional original art, 3-D original art and 2-D reproduction. Now, the NASA/Etsy contest winners have been announced, and the Best of Show award has gone to Colleen and Eric Whiteley (a.k.a. ColleenWhiteley) for their beautifully detailed Northstar Table.

The Grand Prize Winner of the contest, the Northstar Table features a hidden compartment that opens by pressing one of the stars on its surface. The circular brass inlay represents the stars in the night sky on the evening of the first moon landing, and you have to identify the North Star in order to open the hidden drawer. The table brought the Whiteleys a $500 first prize and trip to see the space shuttle Endeavour's last launch in April 2011.
• Winner - 2D Original: Rachel Barry Hobson (a.k.a. RachelHobson) grabbed the first spot in the 2-D original category for her “High Texture Hand Embroidery of the Moon.”
• Winner – 2D Reproduction: The winner in the 2-D reproduction category is the piece "Universal Thoughts” by artist Nikkita Karsan Bhakta, and it shows water droplets floating in interstellar space.
• Winner - 3D Original: In the 3-D original category, artist Patrick Burt of Arizona got the first position for “Brother Sun, Sister Moon,” a titanium ring embedded with silver, gold and diamonds, which represent stars, the sun, moon, Mercury, Mars, Venus, Jupiter and an intricately cut Saturn.
Category winners will be given a $250 Etsy shopping spree and a swag bag full of NASA and Etsy merchandise.
