Born in a closely-knit, religious family, Fantasia Barrino took to singing in the church and discovered that she loved doing it. She was soon into difficult times, getting pregnant in adolescence and taking up odd jobs to support the child. With almost no previous experience, she auditioned into American Idol 3 and grew in confidence as the show progressed. In May 2004, she won by a margin of 1.3 million votes and immediately got a $1 million contract with J Records. Interestingly, her first was I Believe which was followed by a 13-track album, Free Yourself. She immediately began active touring and also tried her hand at acting. Her role in The Color Purple, a Broadway musical, won her the Theatre World Award for 2007. She finally won a Grammy too in 2010 for the album Back to Me. She is a single mother to her son, Dallas Xavier Barrino.
