Groundbreaking Study Finds Turmeric Extract Superior to Prozac for Depression
According to a recent clinical study published in a leading journal “Phytotherapy Research” it has been reliably established that the extracts of turmeric, a popular South Asian spice have significant health benefits. Research indicates that the extracts of turmeric are significantly more effective in treating serious states of depression compared to “Prozac”, one of the best known anti-depressants in the world. It seems that the organic compound “primary polyphenol” available in turmeric and popularly known as “curcumin” does not have any side effects when used to treat patients suffering from depression. Curcumin has been found to be both safe and very effective for treating people afflicted with clinical depression. The pioneering research was performed at the Pharmacology Department of the Government Medical College situated in the city of Bhavnagar in the Indian province of Gujarat. Reports indicate that the entire clinical trial process involved about 60 patients down with major depressive disorder. The main objective of the experiment was to make a comparison of the safety and efficiency of Curcumin by pitting it against Fluoxetine, commonly referred to as Prozac. The subjects were selected in a random order and were administered a treatment lasting six weeks with a dosage of either 20mg of Prozac or 1000mg of Curcumin. In a few cases the two different medicines were combined to generate a potent potion. Reports indicate that it has been observed that those patients who took curcumin showed better results and responded more positively towards the treatment. Therefore this one of its kind clinical test provides enough evidence to strengthen the presumption that curcumin based medicines are one of the safest modes for treatment of patients suffering from major depressive disorders. The added advantages of using curcumin range from benefits like freedom from the supposedly toxic side effects usually associated with Prozac, powerful neuroprotective properties and restoration of brain functionality. The study also indicates that unlike Prozac, curcumin doesn’t aggravate other psychotic disorders and suicidal tendencies of patients. Apparently this is good news for those patients who have been suffering for a long time from depression as well as several clinics that are treating mental and emotional disorders. However despite the early promise it is too early to surmise if the results of this small trial could be extrapolated to a much wider audience. It is safe to predict that in the event the supremacy of curcumin based medication over Prozac is conclusively established, it can be a truly groundbreaking news for millions of patients.
