Apart from wine and whiskey, there are some things in this world which seem to be gaining on novelty value, like cars for that matter. Though there are exceptions like the 1963 Ferrari GTO which commanded a $32million price bid at a recent auction, the likes of a far more toned down 1913 King Alfonso XIII seems to be in demand as well. One of the few vehicles in history named after a king, it also is one of the rarest cars in world as only 4 such unique examples were ever created. It is perhaps the most important reasons, why this car is being stated to command anything between $750,000 and $1 million at the upcoming Amelia Island auction.

King Alfonso XIII was known to be a very keen enthusiast of the Hispano Suiza cars, so much so he owned around 30 of them spread all over Europe, to be used specially during his visits. This car was originally supposed to be called the 15T, but the company thought otherwise and decided to rename this model after the biggest patron, King Alfonso. Known to be a true sports car of that generation, this car packed in 64 HP 4-cylinder 3.6-liter engine, which had a top speed of around 127 km/ph. The interiors were equally majestic for comfort of the passengers with extensive woodwork, and intricate designs on metal components. So much was the regal popularity of the car, that without much publicity, the car began to be the demand of everyone who was financially strong enough to buy it. In other words, the car sold itself.

But the current condition that the vehicle seems to be in, wasn’t that way always. During the middle of the 1980’s, Patricio Chadwick and Emilio Polo were touring the regions near Seville, Spain in search for a surviving model of the King Alfonso car. They were eventually pointed to Marquis de Sanclucar de Barrameda, from where they received this particular car (Chassis 718) in rather sorry state; so much so, that the seller wanted to know if they were going to take the whole body! But over the years, each component, including the rare engine parts, and also the vintage leather work inside the vehicle were gradually restored, finally landing it in the present state. This needed considerable detailing and manual effort, as some parts very already a part of history, whereas designs had changed rapidly by then, eg: the large windows and doors which look like those in residential houses.

But now, this rare specimen of artificial car preservation is on sale, and the looks of it say it is going to be quiet the showstopper in its own right. In fact, it brings back some memoroies of the 1912 Lancaster limousine, owned by the Maharaja of Rewa, which went for sale at a Bonham’s Auction last year.
