James Taylor is an American singer-songwriter and musician who excels in the instruments vocals, guitar and the harmonica. A five-time Grammy Awards winner, Taylor has many other achievements to his name, the most recent being a Carnegie Hall Perspectives series comprising four concert evenings presented by Carnegie Hall and featuring Taylor and personally selected musical guests, in the spring of 2012. Taylor was also awarded the National Medal of Arts, America’s highest honour for artistic excellence recognizing “outstanding achievements and support of the arts”, by President Barack Obama in a ceremony at the White House in March 2011. Taylor has an estimated net worth of $60 million. He has retained a large audience for his songs for over four decades now. His major breakthrough was in 1970 with the #3 single "Fire and Rain". The following year he had his first #1 hit with "You've Got a Friend", a recording of Carole King's classic song. His 1976 Greatest Hits album was certified Diamond and has sold 12 million US copies. Some of Taylor’s best-selling and most-awarded albums (including Hourglass, October Road and Covers) were released during the late 1990s and 2000s. Taylor was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000. Taylor undertook a national tour in 1980 though he did not have any album to promote. The tour was a great success and from thereon touring became a regular part of his career. Taylor has also been visibly active in environment and liberal causes. He had joined the “Vote for Change” tour in 2004. Taylor owns a house in the Berkshire County town of Washington, Massachusetts. James Taylor was born in Boston, Massachusetts, U.S. on March 12, 1948. His father, Isaac M. Taylor was from a well-off family of Scottish ancestry and practiced as a resident physician at the Massachusetts General Hospital. His mother, Gertrude Woodard, was an aspiring opera singer, perhaps which is why James had this music thing in his blood. James’ is a family of musicians. His four siblings—Alex, Livingstone, Kate and Hugh also have been musicians. Besides, James’ children with first wife Carly Simon, Ben and Sally, have also taken up musical careers. James has had three marriages. His first one was with Carly Simon (1972–1983) and the second was with Kathryn Walker (1985–1995). He has been happily marrried to Caroline "Kim" Smedvig since Feb-2001.
