Known for her long legs and special pout, the Peurto Rican model, Joan Rodriguez Smalls became a coveted catwalk girl and rose to fame with her selection in the Spring 2010 Givenchy couture show. Though not a household name, she has been ranked as the #1 model in the world by the end of 2012. Joan Smalls' wealth derives from her successful and prosperous modeling career that looks all set to skyrocket. She has modeled for all the top magazines and brands in the world and is currently signed up by IMG Management. She has also dabbled in acting with her latest stint being the co-hosting of House of Style, MTV's fashion series. Joan's spending follows the pattern of every top supermodel looking at an amazing growth curve. As expected, her lifestyle includes some of the world's top brands - Brian Atwood, Michael Kors, Amanda Pearl, Bumble & Bumble, Alexander McQueen and Carolina Herrera to name a few. She is a prominent guest or visitor at events, fashion weeks and functions. She is involved in the charity, Project Sunshine which provides free educational, recreational as well as social programs to children and families leading lives with medical challenges. She was also part of the walk for charity organized by the supermodel, Naomi Campbell. Joan was born on the island of Peurto Rica and grew up into a teenager there. All the while, she was waiting to flower a career in modeling which began in 2007 when she moved in with her aunt who stayed at Queens. By 2008, she had already transitioned into film through It's Alright video by Ricky Martin. However, her big break happened when designer Riccardo Tisci picked her to walk exclusively for Givenchy Spring 2010 couture show. After that, she has become noted, getting prime campaigns in her name. She has walked for top-notch designers - Oscar de la Renta, Brian Reyes, Sophie Theallet, Catherine Malandrino, Stella McCartney, Jean Paul Gaultier, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Derek Lam, Alexander Wang, Hermès and Jason Wu. She became a regular for Vogue and got contracts with Gucci and Estee Lauder. She then became Victoria's Secret's model by the end of 2010. Her latest campaign in 2012 has also been for Givenchy. By the end of 2012, she was named as the top model in the world. She has remained a doting daughter, buying a car for her father from her first-earned dollars. She is still single but the way she is headed, it may not be long before

Quotes

  • I became obsessed watching fashion TV shows when I was a teenager and recognized that I had the height and body frame. I especially became hooked when I saw on 'E! True Hollywood Story' how much a model can make and how I can achieve a better living for my family and me.
  • A career high was when I did a cover for 'W Magazine''s July issue with Steven Meisel. So few girls shoot with Meisel in their career, and a lot of people had told me I would never achieve that, so it was a dream come true.
  • When you look at the world, the world isn't just one palette. It's a beautiful rainbow, and why not have someone to represent that rainbow?
  • I just want to continue to break barriers and to show the industry and the world that beauty is diverse, and you don't have to be a certain stereotype to be beautiful.
  • When you want something so bad and when something great happens, I think it's instinct that you say, 'This is gonna be the moment that's gonna change everything. Everybody is gonna see me a different way.'
