He survived but what followed was baptism by fire as he had a very tough childhood, having to cope with the separation of his parents and life in an orphanage. His experience at the auditioning of a 1994 film won him experience to figure in an ad for Knorr soup. A breakthrough came in 1996 when he landed a high-profile role in Michael Collins. The Loss of Sexual Innocence and Bend It Like Beckham got him to the mainstream audience. He played a wide variety of roles with his high point being the Golden Globe for Best Actor for the role of Elvis Presley in Elvis. He also flourished in his modeling career. He has been in and out of rehab to overcome his alcohol addiction.

I completely believe that I will produce my best work and my best work will come in my thirties.
If I wasn't so insecure about myself I wouldn't work as hard as I do. I am constantly seeking approval.
A lot of my success is because of what I look like. I know that.
My mother said I was a star when I was about four years old. That's all I need.
Even though I've had the body of work I've had, and the success I've had, I do not rest on my laurels whatsoever.
