Limited edition Chromed Audi R8 to go under the hammer for Elton John charity

Chrome Audi R8

Going with the tradition of the last 8 years, Audi has created a limited edition Chrome Audi R8, which will be auctioned at the Tie & Tierra dinner ball for the Elton John Aids Foundation (EJAF). Conceptualized and designed by the famous Damien Hirst, this limited edition version of the Audi sports car is expected to be centre of attention at the event, and command a premium price like the pink Audi A1 did last year.

The Audi R8 has a 5.2 liter engine, which generates a total of 525 horsepower at 8000 Rpm. It takes a meager 3.7 seconds for the car to reach from 0-100 kmph, and has an average mileage of 12 kms to a gallon. Its salient features include the 19-inch wheels with performance tires, the Bluetooth seat-belt microphone, the Homelink remote transmitter, parking system with rear view camera, and signature LED headlamps.

Added with the special chrome look, the car surely is a crow-puller with its presence. The Elton John AIDS Foundation was created in 1992, in the city of New York, by the famous musician himself, with a mission to raise funds and lead research, development and awareness efforts for AIDS. Later in 1993, Sir Elton John took the headquarters to London, U.K. where it continues its mission of aiding awareness campaigns and research for the prevention of the killer disease.

Ever since inception, the organization has managed to collect $220 million in donations in 55 countries around the world for the cause. For the last 8 years, the organization has managed to collaborate with car maker Audi, to create limited edition versions of its cars which are auctioned off at the Tie & Tierra ball held every year, to raise funds for the foundation. This time, a limited edition chrome version of the Audi R8 sports car is expected to be the auction, which had earlier garnered a lot of attention at the Frankfurt Motor show in 2009.

Previous examples of car auctions for the Elton John Aids Foundation can be seen at our coverage for Rolls Royce Phantom Drop-head Coupe that fetched a price $1.6 million. Other luxury items sold at this auction would include the set of ‘blinged’ iPods that contained the select best hits of the master musician. When style and a noble cause come together, the sight can be only be left for everyone to witness.
