It’s no doubt one-of-a-kind collector’s item, a museum quality work of art and, a marvelous musical instrument. Steinway and Sons have earned a name for their gorgeous pianos. A few days back, we were talking about the historical Steinway 9.6′ Concert Grand Piano that was up for sale on eBay. Well, the Walden Woods Art Case piano is an upshot of is a unique collaboration between Steinway and Sons, marquetry artist Silas Kopf, popular recording artists, and two charities (the Walden Woods Project and American Forests). Many artists, including Elton John, Dave Brubeck, Herbie Hancock, Bruce Hornsby and Billy Joel have already played this piano. Naturally felled wood found from the area surrounding historic Walden Pond in Massachusetts has been used for the marquetry wood art on the piano. The legs of the piano are in the shape of inverted arches that describe Walden Pond and one of Thoreau’s most well known quotations, “I went to the woods to live deliberately…” is engraved in the upper rim of the piano. The Walden Woods Art Case piano is expected to sell for at least $500,000.
