Andrea Divirgilio / November 29, 2011

The 1912 Lanchester Limousine

The erstwhile Maharaja of Rewa, a princely state in present-day India, had ordered a customized limousine in 1912 for himself. He had paid a princely sum of $1,500 for this special limousine from Lanchester Motor Company. The maharaja and his royalty may not have stood the test of time, but his legacy continues in the form of this exotic limousine. Owning a classic of such pedigree and caliber which may seem like a fascination has been made entirely possible by Bonhams, known to offer rare automobiles. We have earlier as well brought to your notice some of the finest and vintage set of wheels that have gone under the hammer. Most prominent of them being the ‘Star of India’, a 1934 Rolls-Royce Phantom that was custom made for the Maharaja of Rajkot. The Rolls-Royce fetched close to a whopping $15 million making it the most expensive four-wheel ride in the world. But this particular limo, steeped in history with deep connections to the Indian royalty, can prove to be an equally scintillating addition to your collection.

The 1912 Lanchester Limousine

When driving around this limo, you will feel none less than a maharajah yourself. The royal vehicle which boasts some of the finest craftsmanship of the years gone by will be liked by car enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike. The mighty 38hp limousine, which is ranked alongside the Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost and various Napier models in terms of engineering brilliance, features a six-cylinder engine that delivers an impressive power of 63 bhp @ 2,200rpm. The limousine also features a retractable roof which enables it to be used as an open tourer as well. The roof which was specially ordered by the Maharaja had ventilation louvers and an electric fan inside a dome to provide respite from hot Indian weather. Such was his fascination for the car that Maharaja of Rewa later ordered a 40hp Lanchester as its successor. The vintage limo made its way back to Britain in the 60s and was acquired by North Country collector, Douglas Thompson of Teesside. The limo has been the ‘crown jewel’ of his collection of significant Lanchester motor cars for 27 years.

The auction which will take place on December 1 at Weybridge, Surrey, in southeast of England, hopes to fetch $125,000-160,000 for this vintage set of wheels. For those, who have a keen interest in the rides of the royal families, our earlier coverage on the same will surely help to satiate their desire.
