Maximilian Büsser & Friends (MB&F), the renowned Swiss watch manufacturer known for bringing child’s sense of awe and playfulness into high-end watchmaking, has earlier amazed us with their ‘toadly’ awesome HM3 Frog watch and the HM3 Frog Zr timepiece in purple. Now, watch designer Maximilian Büsser has once again turned to wild creatures of the South American rainforest for inspiration, designing the limited edition HM3 watch on the small yellow-banded poison dart frog from the family Dendrobatidae, with a scientific name Dendrobates Leucomelas. Similarly, like the poison dart frog's deadly potential is camouflaged in the rainforest by this amphibian’s exotically patterned yellow and black skin, the HM3 Poison Dart Frog watch's high-tech zirconium case is also disguised by a sleek, black colored layer of PVD. While the bulbous hour and minutes domes took its inspiration from the real-life amphibious poison dart frog's protruding eyes.
Similarly as the protruding eyes of the amphibious poison dart frog enables them to see in all directions without having to turn their head, the bulbous hour and minutes domes of this timepiece also let the wearer to easily read the time, that too from variety of angles without having to turn the wrist.
The bulbous hour and minutes domes has been meticulously machined from solid aluminum, which is chosen for its optimal strength to weight ratio, as the dome weighs just over 0.5g. First, the domes are milled from the outside and then from the inside to arrive at a wall thickness of just 0.28mm, ensuring their energy requirements are kept to an absolute minimum.
Further, the two semi-spherical sapphire crystal domes protecting the hour and minute domes have been shaped and then polished with utmost precision as the sapphire's slightest imperfection could produce a disconcerting magnification effect. Also, serious attention to detail has been given regarding the fine hand-finishing of the highly tuned engine mechanism that runs away inside.
Notably, MB&F’s latest HM3 Poison Dart Frog is a limited edition timepiece with only 10 examples, which will be made exclusively available at the Hour Glass.
Also, we have earlier seen the MB&F Moonmachine by Stephan Sarapenva which is a museum-worthy piece, the MB&F HM4 Thunderbolt wristwatch which is a true work of art, the MB&F’s Legacy Machine No1, and the MB&F’s HM4 RT which is a high-tech flying machine.
