Meteorite auctioned for $93K

Nandini Rathi / April 12, 2006

meteorite 1Meet ‘Valley of the Sky’, the new, unsullied and real McCoy starting a fresh chapter in the world of art, and of course creating lots of ripples. It’s a meteorite believed to have descended from the belt between Mars and Jupiter and has fetched $93,000 at an auction of rare space sculptures in New York.

The Bonhams’ New York natural history auction house saw around 10 such chunks of iron believed to be thousands of years old and discovered in the Campo del Cielo crater field in Argentina. The Valley of the Sky weighs 355 pounds and was purchased by a private collector in the United States.

The auction house was expecting to sell this art from outer space between $40,000 and $50,000. If that sold for $93K, imagine the price of a statue carved out of the piece?
