From a tech-savvy kid to a media mogul and finally becoming the mayor of New York City, Michael Rubens Bloomberg’s epic journey is a truly inspirational and galvanizing one.
Born in a middle-class family, Bloomberg displayed a keen drive for technology from a nascent age. This led him to pursue a degree in engineering from Johns Hopkins University after which he earned his MBA from Harvard Business School. Bloomberg landed his maiden Wall Street job in 1966 for Salomon Brothers where he quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a partner in a span of merely six years. When Salomon was acquired in 1981, Bloomberg had to sell his share in the company but eventually he cashed out a hefty $10 million. What Bloomberg did with this money has become a legend in the world of business. With a vision to seamlessly integrate information and technology and the backing of Merrill Lynch, Bloomberg launched a financial information services company called Bloomberg LP. As the company grew from strength to strength, Bloomberg dedicated more of his time to philanthropy.
His desire to improve education, medical research and arts has provided the thrust for much of his philanthropic activities. Someone who is a staunch believer of giving back to the society, Bloomberg entered the political arena in 2002 when he became the 108th mayor of New York City. In 2005, he was re-elected mayor of the Big Apple. Controversially, in 2008, Bloomberg ran for a third term as mayor. After spending an unprecedented amount of his own money to the tune of $90 million on the campaign, he secured a record third consecutive term in 2009.
I don't know. Maybe others have certain secrets, but mine is very simple. Work hard and it will work out.
Being a fiscal conservative is not about slashing programs that help the poor, or improve health care, or ensure a social safety net. It's about insisting services are provided efficiently, get to only the people that need them, and achieve the desired results.
"You bet I did. I enjoyed it." regarding the consumption of marijuana in past.
I am what I am and, you know, I'm a very lucky guy.
I think if you look at people, whether in business or government, who haven't had any moral compass, who've just changed to say whatever they thought the popular thing was, in the end they're losers.
It's no fun to protest on an empty stomach.
The public is mad, frustrated, but what the public wants is progress.
