Born in a wealthy family who inherited her grandfather Mario Prada’s well-established Italian leather-goods business in 1978, Miuccia Prada has literally changed the way people perceive fashion. Coming from a background as diverse as her designer range, Prada earned her Ph.D in Political Science which was followed by five years of studying and performing mime at Teatro Piccolo. Perhaps, it was this myriad of experience that enabled her to transform Prada into one of the most successful Haute Couture brands in the world. It all started with her nylon bags, an unheard commodity in the world of luxury goods. This simple but well-crafted and highly functional rucksack worked a charm and became the cornerstone of the Prada empire. In 1988, a women’s clothing line was born.
With support and encouragement from her husband Patrizio Bertelli, who is the business mind behind the designer, Miuccia launched a menswear line in 1993. The same year, she also launched her offshoot line, Miu Miu, which is in complete contrast to her original designer wear. 1993 turned out to be a glorious one for the fashion diva as she won a Council of Fashion Designers of America International Award that year. Apart from Prada’s elegant and classy range of clothes, a plethora of other designer accessories play a significant role in making the multibillion-dollar empire one of the most popular and iconic labels in the world. As of now, Prada operates in over 250 stores spread across more than 65 countries. The first couple of the fashion world is extremely passionate about sailing and owns a 75-foot sailboat, ‘Luna Rossa’, that’s a regular feature in the America's Cup every year.
