Natalie Portman was born to Shelley and Avner Hershlag in Jerusalem, Israel. Though born in Israel, she attended early schooling in Washington D.C and elementary schooling in New York and High school in Long Island. Portman has said that although she really loves the States... her heart's in Jerusalem, “That's where I feel at home.” Her first on-screen appearance was as a child artist in the movie Leon in 1994. And from the mid 1990s she found herself a career in the film industry and in 2011 she won the Academy Award for her portrayal of Nina Sayers in Black Swan.
Though Natalie is yet to feature in the lists of highest paid actresses, her earnings in the year 2010-11 is estimated to be $8 million. Her earnings are mostly from the Star Wars sequel and from her own production venture "handsomecharlie films" that gets her a handsome income every year. Portman is mostly doing smaller films and had met only few successes like Black Swan and V for Vendetta which grossed over $ 100 million. At the age of ten Portman turned down an offer to become a child model to focus on acting. While other kids spent their holidays vacationing somewhere Portman was attending theater camps. Natalie adopted her grandmother's maiden name 'Portman' once she was offered a role to act in movie. Portman has even produced a few movies and still continues to do so. Natalie even made her directorial debut with a short movie "Eve" at the Venice Film Festival. She has also appeared in music videos of Paul McCartney and American folk singer Devendra Banhart. She had a brief relationship with Devendra Banhart. She then married choreographer Benjamin Millepied whom she met on the sets of Black Swan and has a son named Aleph. Apart from several awards, Portman has a degree in psychology from Harvard College and has even co-authored with scientists Ian Hurley and Jonathan Woodward in publishing two research papers.
