Nandini Rathi / April 16, 2012

Johan Kauppi, the designer for whom nature is the genuine source of inspiration has designed the OVA Sauna, that brings the very strong and yet so fragile egg shape to mind, which is also nature’s most supreme and complete form. OVO’s unique, beautiful, incredibly practical and effective design expresses the essence of sauna baths, offering wellness retreat in a box. Designed on the experiences of the traditional sauna ritual in north of Scandinavia, the OVO sauna’s functionality is based of the Finnish sauna, which is a process comprising of 3-parts; the cool relaxation room, the hot sauna bath and the washing ceremony.

The exterior as well the interior of the sauna room creates is a refreshing take on the traditional concept and can serve as an independent unit or placed as a pod inside your wellness room to merge with your interiors. Based on the traditional ritual, the designer Johan Kauppi has given OVO two different doors in corresponding sides, where one leads to the showers and the other to the cool relaxation. In order to create a sauna-room with strong sense of form and integrity, OVO sauna lacks windows, aside from the glass doors. Incredibly built, the volume of the sauna is small where it needs to be small, near the heat source. And, it’s big where it needs to be, in the social space where you sit; the spacious circular benches.

OVO’s unique design has opened up new horizons in home interiors. OVO also allows the users to combine it creatively in two or more entries, perhaps for different temperature settings, female and male parts along with various surface treatments, etc. Further, OVA sauna with associated room dividers can be positioned and combined in the room to build an open spa landscape with natural integrity of the various functions. OVO sauna naturally divides the functional areas from each other.

Lighting is hidden under the benches along with a couple of spot-lights placed in the ceiling. In addition on the outside, the sauna is prepared for a light strip under the edge of its lower side.

The sauna’s ventilation principle is masterly planned according to the traditional Finnish way; supply air is taken near the floor area and the heat source. Further, the leaving air is placed on the opposite side as high up as possible, allowing good air circulation to keep the room climate pleasant.
