The New Year's Day of 2009 saw Richard Gere and his wife Carey Lowell visiting the paradise St. Barts island along with their son, Homer.

Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation aims to create a future filled with hope for families and children suffering from AIDS. Apart from providing the necessary care and treatment for the AIDS patients, it also supports the acceleration of the new-treatment discovery for pediatric illnesses. Richard Gere championed and co-founded the Heroes Project which develops co-ordinated campaigns to battle the stigma of AIDS in India by educating the public and advocating change in policies. He also hosted the World Aids Day event in the United Nations in 1992.
Meals On Wheels
The MOWAA or the Meals On Wheels Association of America works for the social, physical, economic and nutritional betterment of the vulnerable Americans through meal services provided. Apart from providing information and tools, it also gives cash grants to local senior-meals programs throughout the nation. Richard Gere's father, Homer George Gere, volunteered for the Association for 18 years. In his father's footsteps, Richard Gere is now the spokesperson for MOWAA which is one among America's oldest and largest such organisations.
Free The Children
The wonderful thing about Free The Children is that it is a children's charity founded by Craig Kielburger in 1995 when he was 12 years old! The organization today builds schools and provides alternative income projects for those in the developing countries. The inspiration for the organization came from the death of Iqbal Masih, the 12 year old bonded laborer from Pakistan who spoke out against the work-conditions. Richard Gere has supported and championed the cause of this charity which has also partnered with the United Nations and Oprah's Angel network.
Amnesty International is a global movement that has today gathered more than 3 million activists, members and supporters in over 150 countries to fight for the cause of international human rights. Independent of any political ideology, government, economic interests and religion, it has been battling for the human rights according to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The organization is actively supported by Richard Gere who had spoken in solidarity for the Iraqis after US bombardment of Iraq.
A foundation in his own name has been instituted because of Richard Gere's interest in the Tibetans. In 1978, Richard Gere traveled extensively through Tibet after studying Zen for five years. He met several monks and became a practicing Buddhist at the Gelugpa school in Tibet. The foundation that he established awards grants to groups and individuals interested in the cultural preservation of Tibet as well as the Tibetan people. The foundation directly supports His Holiness, the Dalai Lama and the whole of the Tibetan community which is in exile from the brutal Chinese occupants.
The Hollywood superstar is very fond of humble horses. He has four Appaloosa Horses which are easily recognized by the colorful pattern on their coat. The actor's horses reportedly stay at the backside of his home. This Appaloosa breed of horses are known to be very versatile and have great endurance and agility.
Richard Gere has a passion for collecting guitars - guitars which are some of the best sounding and most intricately crafted. Despite his love for guitars, the actor had auctioned all his guitar collection comprising of 107 vintage guitars through Christie's in New York for a noble cause. All the proceeds of the auction went to the Gere Foundation which supports the cause of the Tibetan people and towards AIDS education in India. According to the actor, he put up all the guitars for sale because his wife was 'tired of seeing them'! Only about 5 guitars remained unsold in the collection which boasted of vintage American-guitars from Gibson, C.F. Martin, Fender, Epiphone, Albert King, Peter Tosh, James D'Aquisto and Gretsch.
