Poets found in them inspirations for literary masterpieces. And now the bird, in all its vivaciousness and embodiment of free spirit, inspires an entire time piece collection. Dubbed Wings Of Time, Century, through its latest range of delicate jewelry watches, pays ode to the bird. A time piece, an expression of artistic brilliance, whichever way you look at it, the Wings Of Time pendant Jewelry watch is an ultimate show stealer.

Century design Wings of Time pendant jewellery watch
Century design Wings of Time pendant jewellery watch

The spectacular jewelry watch is the baby of Century’s master craftsmen, who conceived and developed an idea into a full grown time piece. The primary concept was to create a golden cage following the lines of Art Deco patterns. For those who did not know, Art Deco is a design style dating back to Paris of the 1920s. An internationally recognized art form, it has influenced major areas of design including fashion and jewelry, interior and industrial design. The celebrated design style has been reproduced in the most exquisite manner by Century’s skilled craftsmen. And now more about the intricate design, which makes the Century jewelry pendant watch all the more appealing to look at.

The heart and soul of the timepiece lies in its caged bird
The heart and soul of the timepiece lies in its caged bird

The golden cage features four opening windows, each of them set with a Century sapphire. The exquisite pieces are all issued from the Century workshops, polished and cut to perfection. The heart and soul of the timepiece, however, lies in its golden bird. Visible from all sides, the bird can be seen right through the Sapphire’s transparent body. The caged beauty, hand crafted in gold, cuts a soothing picture against the lavish backdrop of the ornamented cage.

In what can be described as a mark of skilled artistry, the piece, when pulled down, gives way for the dial and parts to appear from within the cage. The bird melts into the background, as the watch’s more technical components park themselves on its position. The creature now places itself in a space surrounded by the hours and minutes hands. The Wings of Fire collection is available in 18 karat red and white gold versions.

The Mogul Alexandrite
The Mogul Alexandrite

Century timepieces featuring design extravagances remind us of another watch from the company’s stable. Named Mogul Alexandrite, the watches are designed specifically to resemble jewelry pieces. A rose cut added to its already enriched appeal. Featuring 192 facets, the exquisite design on the dial of the watch is entirely handcrafted. The result is a breath taking phenomena, wherein light penetrates the case only to rebound along the facets. Like Wings of Time, the Mogul Alexandrite is available in two variations-the white gold and red gold. 48 diamonds adorn the dial, with lugs, flaunting a claw like design, attaching it to the alligator strap.

Both the watches described above are completely in line with Century’s motto- “Beyond imagination”. Breathing life into those ideas and imaginations, there is an army of skilled craftsmen, working day and night at the century workshops. Each and every century sapphire is hand polished and hand faceted for best effects. Wings Of Time is, therefore, a fine expression of dedication, artistry and innovativeness.

We had told you about the Electrolux 3D hob earlier. Stylish and energy efficient, it packed functionality and creativity in one suitcase. Keyhole hob, another Electrolux creation that we reported on, bagged the prestigious gold award at the 2010 Singapore Design awards. European in design, the hob was meant primarily for Asian kitchens. And now, evoking fresh memories of hob- related experiments in the past, Fagor present their latest collection- fashionable induction hobs with a dash of Freezone technology and innovative “Pasta Function” thrown in.

The new Fagor induction hob with Freezone technology comes with
The new Fagor induction hob with Freezone technology comes with “pasta function”

The spectacular pieces are available in 93 cm and 63 cm size variations. A silver glass finishing adds to its charm. The 93 cm Induction hob, having special touch control features, comes with a central digital display. Three circular zones, measuring 21 cm, 16 cm and 28 cm each, provide you with ultimate independence while cooking. In addition to the three regular zones, the hob gives you a fourth Freezone.

The Freezone, true to its name, frees you from the torment of limited spaces. They outsmart regular inductions hobs in enabling you to heat multiple pans anywhere in the zone. The ceramic glass surface is fitted with multiple inductors which allow the pans to be placed as and where the owner pleases. And the best part is, you can actually cook multiple pans at the same uniform temperature or get the Freezone divided into two separate zones.

For Pasta freaks, the induction hob could turn into an absolute delight. The piece features a unique “Pasta Function” which dutifully alerts the owner when the boiling point of water is ideal for pasta to be added. After adding necessary ingredients, all you need to do is, set the cooking time and then wait until the hob emits an audible signal. Your pasta is now ready to eat! Innovative and user-friendly, the product comes with a five year warranty.

In recognition of his extraordinary performance, Mel Wimore’s employers gifted him a stunning Montblanc pen. Overjoyed, inspired, Mel embarked on his decades-long journey with Montblanc pens- a journey which culminates this June with The Mel Wilmore Collection of Extraordinary Montblancs auction at Bonhams. And before the gavel bangs on the exquisite pieces, they will be showcased at cities like Hong Kong and New York. Bonhams earlier collaborated with Butterfields for hosting an auction of rare Montblanc pens, including the the Montblanc Meisterstuck Solitaire Royal LeGrand, a legendary Diamond Solitaire pen featuring 4,500 brilliant cut white diamonds over an 18k yellow gold barrel, also known as one of the world’s most expensive writing instruments.

Before we go exploring Wilmore’s fantastic collection, let us take a journey back in time and find out more about his undying love for all things Montblanc. Mel’s first Montblanc, the one he received as a gift from his employers, was a black Meisterstruck. This initial token of recognition triggered an exceptional interest in pens. As Wilmore’s career scaled new heights, his fondness of pens continued to grow. With time, he became one of Mont Blanc’s most loved North American clients. Such was his heavenly devotion to Montblancs that the man had a discreet room constructed in his residence, which would store nothing but pens, pens and more pens! For years, Wilmore’s secret pen kingdom lay hidden behind a brilliantly designed hinged bookcase. And what exactly did he have in there? Simply put- the most wondrous collection of Montblanc pens in the world. From anniversary editions to Bohemes to Limited editions- the collection was huge. A Montblanc enthusiast to the core, Wilmore had rarely experimented with other brands. However, on those rare instances that he actually did, Wilmore made sure to get hold of the best and the most interesting. Some these non- Montblancs, which includes the likes of OMOS Mandela pens and Nimikis, also go under the hammer at Bonham’s this June.

Having discussed Wilmore’s exceptional fascination for Montblanc pens, check-out some of the most brilliant pieces from the collection.

Estimated Price: $12,000-20,000

In what can be described as a perfect example of a modern day fountain pen design married onto oriental figures, the Ruby creation will leave you mesmerized. As if the 18 karat gold dragon, set with rubies and diamonds, was not enough the solid background of black resin captivates your senses further. A pearl gleams majestically from the dragon’s mouth as emeralds make its eyes flash with a mysterious glow.

The list further includes breath taking creations in the form of Limited edition John Lennon pens or the princess cut diamond pens. Internet shoppers have reasons to cheer. If you cant make it Bonham’s in person, then 75 sets of skeleton pens and watches await you on eBay. We had earlier told you about the Montblanc diamond solitaire which is expected to grab $175,000 at a Bonham’s and Butterfields sale on May 23rd. Next in line at Bonhams from the stable of Montblanc, Wilmore’s exquisite collection, let us all hope, smashes records.

All aspects considered, the Montblanc collection, it goes without saying, cannot be described in words. The sheer vastness and diversity of it leaves us with one realization- we now understand why Mr. Wilmore had to have an entire hidden treasury built to guard his possessions!

But it seems that the scenario is for an immediate overturn or so claims designer John McGinnis, the man behind the innovative Synergy aircraft. The current evolution of aircraft engineering gives us enough confidence to think so. We have earlier told you about Yuneec electric sport airplane prototype priced at around $89,000, and the highly fuel-efficient Pipistrel’s Panthera four-seater airplane. The compact of the lot is this small passenger airplane, called the Synergy with a mesmeric power efficiency that will even beat our cars down in mileage. The Synergy project was introduced in NASA’s 2011 Green Flight Challenge and is in look for an initial financial support of $65,000 on Kickstarter.

Fuel consumption

The promising Synergy aircraft can take up to five people on board with a breathtaking fuel efficiency of 40mph per gallon. Its designers claim that the aircraft can provide 10 times better fuel economy than a small regular jet. In other words, the owner will have to endure only 10 percent of the usual cost of flying a jet. The journey in the revolutionary aircraft will be spectacular with enough room, clam and smooth ride experience and an easy operation, Synergy Aircraft brags on its Kickstarter page.

Synergy aircraft
Synergy aircraft

Technical highlights

The Synergy Aircraft team under the highly proficient aircraft designer John McGinnis has been working hard to bring this into reality. A Delta Hawk bio-diesel fueled engine will power the 32-foot wingspan. This propeller engine other than a jet engine rocks a big role in making the aircraft energy-efficient and faster. The aircraft family of McGinnis has not yet revealed the potential top speed of Synergy. Anyway, it may get a speed from 100mph to 450mph.

The team utilizes carbon fiber composites and CNC machines to build the aircraft with stunning fuel efficiency. The aircraft is to come with steady-flying double box tail shape, which will ensure increased drag reduction and make the design simpler and lighter. Well, the aircraft industry is waiting for the magic product with huge enthusiasm. Leading aeronautical gurus and NASA scientists are following the updates about the flight with nervousness. Being a senior member of AIAA and an expert aircraft designer, we have no reason to doubt the word of John McGinnis regarding the Synergy Aircraft.

A full-size version of the airplane

Aerodynamic design

What it is more stunning with the Synergy is its aerodynamic design and adaptability to hybrid, electric and other advanced engine technologies. According to Synergy team, the airplane is not at all about looks, aesthetics and streamlining, in spite of having a unique aerodynamic design. Beyond everything, it is all about fuel efficiency, speed and cost effectiveness, they claim. Perhaps, in future we can find Synergy as a prominent member among the new generation of day to day air transportation systems like the for Terrafugia’s Transition those who have the moolah.

The Synergy team now looks for an initial development cost of $65K on Kickstarter. Of course, it is only a primary cost and the company will require more funds to wind up the project. As of writing this, around 50 donors have backed the project on the fund-rising site with a $3,409 with 18 days to go.

We had told you about vintage Leica cameras fetching big bucks at auctions. A rare camera from the 1923 Leica o-serie camera made headlines by selling for $1.9 million in 2011. The vintage piece, as we had reported earlier, went under the hammer twice, smashing records on both occasions to become one of the most expensive cameras ever sold at an auction. And, yet again at the WestLicht auction another rare camera from 1923 part of the famous O-series, set a new record for being the most expensive camera, for a whopping $2.8 million selling price. And now, joining the list we have the black enamel Leica MP-126 which brings home a staggering $158,000.

Leica MP-126 auction

News of the latest Leica feat at auction rooms comes days or, simply put, hours after a rare 1923 Leica camera bagged an eye-popping sum in Vienna. The German built beauty was part of a 23 camera line up from 1923. Only half of Leica’s initial lot is believed to be in survival today. While the vintage Leica’s functionality continues to remain under wraps, the piece, needless to point out, will be valued more for its historical legacy than anything else. The same applies to the Leica MP-126 as well. Sold at the Tamarkin and Bertoldi auctions, the black enamel beauty with 50mm Summicron lens was among the four Leicas auctioned on April 29th, the other three being a vintage Leica 72, a black Leica M3, a Leica M2 and a grey Leica IIIc (K). Original and very rare in Ex++ condition, the MP-126 was estimated to fetch around $75,000 - $120,000, but it surpassed its estimates.

Leica camera auction

For those who did not know, Leica’s journey through the world of lenses spans an entire century. The first Leica prototypes were created in the year 1913. Meant to be used for landscape photography, Leica’s was the first camera model that incorporated the standard cinema 35mm film. Leica went through several alterations and made its first public appearance in 1925 at the Leipzig Spring Fair. Leica I was an immediate hit, succeeded by the iconic Leica II and Leica III collections, both of which garnered massive accolades. Today, the brand is known for its carefully designed handcrafted pieces. Aside from newer innovations, the company has released whole battalions of vintage cameras at different auctions back through time. The Leica MP-126, therefore, is a value addition to an already enriched list.

The designers at Coach have been engaged in laborious project to showcase these stunning gent’s wallets in the most perfect manner. This was followed by re-finishing and re-cutting the leathers in order to give them the handcrafted shapes of wallets. World's Fastest Amphibious Land Vehicle for sale at $259,500 http://www.bornrich.com/worlds-fastest-amphibious-land-vehicle-sale-259500.html http://www.instablogsimages.com/1/2012/05/15/front_view_of_sea_lion_dsorb.jpg http://www.bornrich.com/worlds-fastest-amphibious-land-vehicle-sale-259500.html http://www.bornrich.com/worlds-fastest-amphibious-land-vehicle-sale-259500.html#comments Abdul Vahid V There have been lots of amphibious vehicles over the years. They may move on both water and road alike. But, most often, weird design and low performance on road make the amphibious vehicles less worthy for drive on land. At the same time, they may be great vehicles for water. The Sea Lion is different here with an impressive body and incredible performance on both road and water. Powered by a 13B Rotary Engine (Mazda) and stainless steel body, the Sea Lion can run 180mph on road and a better 60mph on water.

Front view of Sea Lion
Front view of Sea Lion

Designer M. Witt has taken six years to finish the Sea Lion project. Witt began with a CAD software design and some spreadsheet calculations. It is now an awesome vehicle that you can smoothly drive on road and water. The vehicle is basically constructed from TIG welded 5052 aluminum and other solid CNC milled components. Amazingly, the Sea Lion has a built-in monocoque fused unibody middle section. With detachable side pods and fenders in the front and rear parts, the amphibious vehicle looks far stunning.

Amphibious World Speed Record Competition Vehicle
Amphibious World Speed Record Competition Vehicle

The Sea Lion is manufactured from a single sheet of paper. It is not made borrowing structural components from any other vehicles or equipment. Indeed, with this vehicle in mind, the designer had plans to make it run faster than all previous speed vehicles. Thus, when the project kicked off in 2006, the designer wanted to run it 45mph faster in water 125mph on road. But thanks to the hard work and innovation he could deploy to its development, the car now gets 60mph water speed and 180mph on land.

Rear view of Sea Lion
Rear view of Sea Lion

The builder of Sea Lion says that apart from a huge variety of amphibious cars out in market, the new vehicle has a great stability in water and road speeds. Some existing vehicles do well on land, but bad in water or reverse. But, Sea Lion, especially thanks to its strange design and great innovation, provides faster performance on both water and earth. Well, it might be the major selling point of the hugely priced luxurious amphibious vehicle.

Right side rear view of Sea Lion
Right side rear view of Sea Lion

No surprise, Sea Lion is presently touted as the world’s fastest amphibious land car. With a speed up to 180mph, no other similar vehicles can beat the Sea Lion. It is also looking stunning. An extremely tiny frontal area has a tremendous aerodynamic design. In speed on high ways, no other amphibious vehicles will have the guts to compete with this superb car. The Sea Lion currently runs on a Mazda Rotary 13b, but is upgradeable to a Renesis Rx8 unit engine for enhanced performance.

Amphibious World Speed Record Competition VehicleAmphibious World Speed Record Competition Vehicle

M. Witt is highly enthusiastic of this project. It has been an enjoyable exploration for him to build this amphibious vehicle, the designer says. After providing a basic structural design of a car, he has been resolving all conflicting interactions between a car and boat for an awesome ride both on water and land. The luxurious amphibious car comes for a whopping price of $259,500. Of course, deluxe customers will be lucky to get such a stunning car for a ride on water and land.

Thrilla in Manilla, the third and final boxing match between Joe Frazier and Muhammad Ali, of which Ali famously remarked “It will be a killa… and a chilla”, is back in a new way. The trunks worn by Ali in that legendary match have sold for a record breaking $100,000 at Robert Edwards auctions. Needless to point out, if Thrilla in Manilla can be universally regarded as one the greatest boxing battles in history, Ali’s trunks, which he wore that day, are no less awe inspiring either.

In terms of design, the trunks have little offer. Made with satin, the pair features waistband trimmings. That the charm and aura of the trunks lie not in its design but the historical legacy associated with it becomes all the more evident as we run a quick eye over the piece. An Everlast label on the waistband proudly announces the name of the wearer. Further down, black marker notations peek from each leg. While the right leg flaunts a “Ali-Frazier Fight/Thrilla in Manilla” remark, a steeped-in-history “Pres. F. Marcos/Manilla, Philippines/Oct 1, 1975″ writing appears on the right. There is also an autograph of Muhammad Ali, scrawled in black ink, beaming from the left corner. A letter of provenance by Craig Hamilton, the celebrated boxing expert, accompanies the trunks. In the letter Hamilton has confirmed the autograph of Ali on the trunk as authentic. The piece, according to Hamilton, had reportedly been acquired by Drew “Bandini” Brown, Ali’s long time assistant trainer. Brown who, in addition to the trunks, had access to several of Ali’s priceless memorabilia stored them in a storage locker near his California home. The collection was sold off following Brown’s death in 1987, only to re-appear years later at a 2002 Sotheby’s auction. The trunks and other items from Brown’s personal locker went to a certain Andrew Heller, Hamilton further noted.

While the latest news about Muhammad Ali’s trunks going under the hammer and fetching big bucks has given his fans a reason to cheer, it hardly comes like a surprise. Ali’s famed trunks have made history on more occasions than one. In 2011, the fight trunks worn by Ali for the Fight of the Century-the legendary bout between Frazier and him-fetched $173,102 at auctions. The trunks have been registered by auctioneer SCP auctions as the “most important item of boxing memorabilia ever to be offered at auction”.

Earlier this month a pair of trunks autographed by the great Boxer himself went to online auctions. The white piece with a black waistband featuring the “Everlast” logo is priced at $15,000.

Coming back to the thrilla in Manilla trunks, the pieces have all been video matched, claim the Robert Edwards auction site. While the trunks, dating back to the 70s, are in a relatively good shape, there is slight discoloration near the waistband. However, given their historicity, minor color spills on the trunks would hardly matter. Thrilla in Manilla of which the trunks are an integral part is, after all, a match that inspired an entire mall in Philippines and has been described by Ali as one where death came closest to him.
