Row, row your boat gently down the stream, Merrily, merrily...life is but a dream. Life is a dream indeed for Max Koriath, the designer of the Schoener Boot Fahren Wooden Boat as it won the VOLVO Sportsdesign award this year. This year's theme was 'EcoDesign,' focusing on systematically bringing ecological factors into play at the earliest stages of the product planning, development and design process and Koriath’s boat fitted the bill to the ‘T. If you thought eco-friendly products were drab, you are sure to change your mind after you see the superbly crafted boat. The design of the boat is literally out-of-the-box idea and creativity at its best. It is made of beech wood sourced from Germany and worked in an industrial process to give it curved free-formed surfaces. The wood used, says the designer grows again permanently and has a positive life-cycle assessment and the material can be completely composted and damaged parts can easily be replaced, just like the engine bonnet of a car. It is a modular concept, with the boat produced in parts not as a whole hull. The eco-friendly boat fits in with the broader concept of sustainable design, which is closely related to the principle of sustainable development. Life will still be a dream for anyone who rows this boat!
