There are a lot of wonderful places here on earth, however, there are also places that are stranger than the most alien landscapes you see in sci-fi films. Places that will give you goosebumps and make your skin crawl. Here are some of those places.

10.Derweze, Turkmenistan

During the excavation in the year 1971, geologists accidentally found a cavern filled with natural gas. Unfortunately, the ground collapsed, leaving a hole that’s 75 meters in diameter. In order to avoid this poisonous gas, the geologists decided to burn the gas off, hoping that the fire would end up usig all the fuel after several days. The gas is still burning until now.

In Italy, considered to be one of the most creepiest locations is the Poveglia Island. In 2007, there were mass graves discovered, and the victims suffered from bubonic plague. Likewise, during the year 1922, it was a mental asylum and there were rumors that a doctor who killed the patients through the means of torture, before he completely lost his sanity and committed suicide. Thus, in the late 60s, the asylum was completely abandoned.

It has been said that this house was built by Sara Winchester, the widow of the boss of munition companies. Rumor has it that her life was never happy; she was childless because her children die when they were small because of a mysterious disease. Later on, Sarah visited a pastor and tried to ask why her life is like that, and the pastor said that the Winchester family had been cursed. The reason being is that, her husband killed thousands of people during the world war, because of the munitions he make. Thus, she must build the house for her to inhabit and the spirit of those people who died. If Sarah wants to live, she must continue to build the house, or else, she will die. That’s the reason why this house has a lot of doors and windows.

Back then, the Ridges was known as the “Athens Lunatic Asylum.” However, it was renamed after the state of Ohio acquired this property. During the time when it was still an asylum, this hospital witnessed hundreds of lobotomies and it was often declared that the causes of insanity of the patients living here are epilepsy and chronic masturbation.

That’s not all. It was also listed as one of the scariest places in the world by the British Society of Physical Research. There was a notorious rapist who suffered from Dissociative Identity Disorder that was housed in this asylum for years. However, the most famous story of this place is the 54-year old woman who escaped and was missing for six weeks. Later on, she was found dead in the unused ward. She was completely naked and her clothes were neatly folded on her side. Due to sun exposure and decomposition, her corpse left a permanent stain on that floor. Rumor has it that her spirit haunts the ward.

Auschwitz, Germany is known to be a Death Camp. Back then, it was a place used to exterminate the Jews. During that time, around 3 million Jew soldiers, Poles, and Gypsies were gassed until they died, burning their bodies in a pile after.

Tourists who visit this place feel despair and some even end up crying, because the inner walls of the gas chambers have white lines that are known to be nail scratches of people who were gassed as they try to escape.

Located in the southeast region of the Samoan Islands and Hawaiian Islands, this island is described as the island that brings darkness and death to those who visit this attraction.

Every month, there are around 3-5 victims that are usually consumed by vicious sharks and a lot of marines during the war have also died on this island, because they have eaten poisonous fishes. For survivors, they described that settling on this island is similar to settling in hell.

Who is not familiar with the classic horror character– Count Dracula. In Romania, there’s a place that’s known to be the emperor’s palace when Vlad Dracula battled against the Turk invaders. Despite the fact that he successfully won over the Turkish army, things did not go well for him. During his escape, he was carrying his only son, but he accidentally fell and died. Likewise, Vlad’s wife was left at the palace and she committed suicide there.

This place is also famous during the Vlad Dracula era, because of how he tortured and impaled the Turks. He was known to be sadistic, getting the name, “Vlad the Impaler.”

Located in Italy, the Capuchin Catacombs is quite famous because of its display of rows of mummified corpses. Most of these corpses are either toddlers and infants. Likewise, there are also some friars, who were part of the order or Capuchin, that were buried there as well. It has been said that these friars were not scared of dying, and they accepted that as part of life. Thus, the catacombs were embellished with their preserved corpse, symbolizing how humble these friars are.

In the canals of Xochimico near Mexico City, an eerie island can be found– it’s so bizarre that it can even be the world’s scariest and strangest tourist attraction. Unfortunately, this island was never perceived to be a tourist’ destination, but it’s an island dedicated to the lost soul of a poor little girl who left this world too early. Thus, there are thousands of dolls hanging from the trees and poles.

According to legends, since 1950s, hundreds of people– more than 500– have committed suicide in Aokihgahara. After six decades, there were around 247 people who attempted to commit suicide in this forest as well. Most people who try to kill themselves here, either die of overdose or they hang themselves. Due to the claims that this forest is really haunted, the government officials on clean up the place annually. If you’re interested, there are a number of YouTube videos showing people going in to the forest and witnessing others who are thinking of committing suicide.
