The story of Taylor Fladgate as a company dates back over a century when some of the best port wines were left in the casks of the winery for aging. After the massive attack of Phylloxera destroyed a lot of the grapes in Europe, some of the premium variety managed to be segregated from being destroyed, and became a part of the Douro family heirloom. However, in 2008 it was discovered once again, after more than a century and a half of aging in casks, and David Guimaraens became the custodian. Though initially it was decided not to part ways, but now that the last surviving member of the family is no more, a total lot of 25 bottles are being sold in the market.

As an assessment from a wine expert who had the fortune of having a sip, describes the beverage as having a complicated bunch of tastes. This would include coffee, treacle, mocha, dried yellow raisins, orange citrus, along with spices and nut overtones. The texture on the palette however, is known to be similar to what a well-aged fruitcake would be like. This means, spending the $3,500 could indeed be worth the shot.
