World’s most expensive pigeon sold for $328,826 to Chinese billionaire

As farfetched our memories go, and extensive our records are, the most extravagant display of wealth on a pet was the $1.6 million Tibetan mastiff dog, which happened to be the most expensive dog. With a price much lesser than that, it’s now the turn of the world’s most expensive pigeon, which was auctioned online recently, for a price of $328,826. The buyer for the expensive Dutch pigeon is known to be Chinese billionaire Hu Zhen Yu, who has bought the pigeon for breeding instead of racing. Though the trend in China shows that pigeons like these are bought generally for racing, but the Chinese shipping magnet seems to have thought otherwise, and breed it instead.

The sport of pigeon racing seems to have caught up with gradual pace in China, where the industry seems to be expanding gradually. This is a sort of new trend because pigeon racing has always been a classic favorite of the European countries like Belgium, United Kingdom, Netherlands, and Germany, where the trade and husbandry has been going on for ages. But it all is changing now, with renewal of interest and developments taking place, which in turn has bought the much sought after sophistication. Talking about it in comparison, Ken Ambler (has been in the trade for over 70 years) mentions, that the birds are very professionally taken care of these days. Earlier the pet pigeons never had a proper arrangement within the house of their owners, but in recent times they seem to be housed in luxurious settings. Also, with the revival of interest in this particular sport, it remains a very productive and lucrative option for those that may join in for the right reasons.

In this case, with the export of the Belgian pigeon, it seems to have once again highlighted what the future could for this trade. With the premium price tag of the particular bird, this auction event by PIPA (Pigeon Paradise) managed to break all previous records by gathering $2,503,962 (€1,899,300) in collections, for the total sale of 245 other pigeons. With the star of the evening bought over by Mr. Yu, he should be a happy and a rather rich man considering its going to be his future venture.
